Description
I investigate the interdependence between the Catholic Church and the Argentinian state that developed during the early 20th century created an institutional church that supported the actions of the state and military even in the context of authoritarian rule. On the other hand, I investigate the secular nature of Uruguay facilitated by anti-clerical measures in the early 20th century created an independent Church that could criticize authoritarian state and military control but not without harsh repression.
