Abstract

This notion of the Kunstkammer as an idealized space functions as a precursor to the art museum-both in its structure and philosophical implications. Both spaces drawn upon and reflect a sanctity normally associated with religious structures and artifacts, and, furthermore, encourage a practice of viewing and experiencing art very similar to the way devotees making a pilgrimage encounter holy relics. As institutions of society and learning, they re-appropriate the cultural and historical significance of objects in order to put them on display and hold them up as art worthy of contemplation.
