Abstract
A reaction which led to a product with properties apparently unlike known forms of thiamine has been observed previously. Since the starting material was thiamine, the one step procedure appeared to lead to a new thiamine-related compound. The above product has been identified as a mixture by means of paper chromatography, and nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and ultraviolet spectroscopy. The two major components are thiamine, the starting material, and thiochrome, an oxidation product of thiamine.
