Abstract
The purpose of this study of Tolstoy, and other nineteenth century Russian writers, was to determine whether Tolstoy was part of a literary movement in Russian literature, or whether he stood separate from the other authors. Tolstoy has been compared with Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov. Similarities and differences in theme, point of view, style, structure, and characterization have been noted.
