Colby College’s yearbook for the Class of 1953. The yearbook is dedicated to former Colby President Franklin W. Johnson and contains introductory pages related to the relocated Colby campus on Mayflower Hill in Waterville, Maine.

This volume was distributed with a seven-inch, 45 rpm phonograph record (the record sleeve was tipped-in to the back cover pastedown). The record is titled "1953 Oracle Review."

Side 1 (6:37):

  1. Colby College President Julius Seelye Bixler speaks about a three-fold alumni gift in memorium of World War II war dead;
  2. The Colby College Glee Club sings "Colbiana," a medley arranged by Colby professor Peter Ré.

Side 2 (8:23):

  1. Introduction by President Julius Seelye Bixler. President Emeritus Franklin Winslow Johnson gives a brief history of the decision, planning, and process of moving the Colby College campus from downtown Waterville to Mayflower Hill.
  2. President Bixler introduces Professor Alfred K. Chapman ‘25, Head of the Colby College English Department. Prof. Chapman speaks on the benefits of the new campus to the Colby student body.
  3. President Bixler: “This is the second week in April and we are holding the convocation to which we have been looking forward to for so long.” President Bixler then introduces Theodore M. Greene of Yale University’s Department of Philosophy [Bixler erroneously states Harvard]. Professor Greene speaks on the role of the liberal arts college education in society.
