Abstract
This renewed interest in Methodism's roots poses many questions. What were Methodists really like in their heyday? What are "Methodist roots"? What is the historical Methodist identity and what should the United Methodist Church learn to emulate or avoid? Would the United Methodists of today see any similarities between themselves and the Methodists of yesteryear? In an era of staid church meetings, general discouragement, and low attendance at District gatherings, Annual Conferences, and other regional Methodist events, what would a New England United Methodist think of a Methodist business meeting in 1800?
