Description

Bollywood movies have generally been a source of escape from reality for the middle class of India. Although the middle class makes up a large segment of the society, most are unaware of the social-economic, religious or educational problems that face people around them. Movies can be a powerful source of delivering these messages to them and articulating discussion. Since the 21st Century, filmmakers in India have been trying to use Bollywood as an instrument of sending these messages to the middle class. However, they have slowly come to realize that the only way of appealing to the Indian mass population is by disguising the messages within the glamorous world of Bollywood. In my paper, I will look into why filmmakers need to camouflage their messages, how successful they have been in doing so and whether this technique will start a new culture of Indian cinema going forth. The films that I will look at include "3 Idiots", "PK", "Oh My God!", "Munnabhai MBBS", "Lage Raho Munnabhai" and "Koi Mil Gaya".
