This presentation examines the factors that led to Church reform under Vargas, the strategy undertaken by the Church, the alliance between Vargas and Dom Leme, Getlio Vargas himself, and the Churchs and states respective relationships with the Brazilian people to explain the trajectory of the Church during the Vargas period. The Brazilian Catholic Church, led by Dom Leme with major assistance from Getlio Vargas, used the Vargas era to reassert itself with a project aimed at universal re-Catholicization, though with some limitation, as a prominent political and societal force in Brazil.
