Description
The mineral plagioclase is a silicate mineral in the feldspar family. Its name is a derivative of the Greek term for oblique fracture which refers to the two cleavage planes, which are a basic physical feature of the plagioclase. Mineralogist Johann Freidrich Christian Hessel named the mineral in 1826 in Germany, as a description of the two prevalent angles of cleavage expressed in plagioclase. The composition of plagioclase exists as a mixture of NaAlSi3O8 (albite) and CaAl2Si2O8 (anorthite).
