Description
Throughout my lifetime, I have seen a growing popularity of and obsession with group fitness classes. It seems like every month there is a new fad that engulfs popular culture. In addition to an increase of interest with the physical body, there has also been an explosion of attention put on mindfulness. Yoga can be seen as the coming together of both body and mind, in turn linking these two contemporary trends of fitness and mindfulness. School Street Yoga Studio is the only public studio in Waterville, which makes it a diverse epicenter of all local yogis. My research seeks to highlight what people get out of their visits to the studio and the practice of yoga, what makes School Street such a desired and unique place, and why this trend of mind and body connection has taken such a strong hold on todays society. What is it in todays world that has us yearning for an escape and an outlet to feel more grounded and how does School Street help in answering these demands?
