Description
Brazil is one of the most socially unequal countries in the world, which is evident in the inequity characterizing the educational system. The majority of the population does not have access to higher quality education, but there are a number of elite secondary schools in the country, including the Escola-Suio Brasileira in So Paulo. The exclusivity of quality education in Brazil is becoming increasingly visible through schools like the Escola-Suio Brasileira that emphasize global leadership in an increasingly connected world. The Escola-Suio Brasileira, for example, maintains a dual, multilingual curriculum as well as the international baccalaureate at the high school level. In the socioeconomic and cultural context of Brazil, the Escola-Suio Brasileira provides the opportunity to explore the dynamics of elite education in both local and global contexts. We present a case study analysis based on interviews with alumni and administrators from the school and a literature review of the Brazilian education system and elite schooling.
