Description
The highly charged, political issue of comfort women, girls forced into sexuality slavery by the Japanese Imperial government during WWII, has been one of the most controversial and wildly misrepresented historical moments in East Asian history. This study looks specifically at the public statements and apologies being made by members of the Japanese political elite in response to a final push by former comfort women looking for recognition and Japanese repentance. How a public apology regarding comfort women will affect Japans attempt at further globalization, as well as the role of social media in the creation and recreation of historical memory, will also be introduced.
