Abstract
When I took beginning sculpture at Colby in September 1970 under the guidance of Ms. Harriett Matthews I acquired some basic knowledge about the use of wood carving tools and the material itself, wood. This information came in the form of classroom discussions with Ms. Matthews and the other students. As is the case in most fields, most of the learning didn't take place by someone telling you something, it came by doing. This paper is concerned with the doing of things and how I achieved specific results in working wood.
