Philosophical perspectives on American studies methodology

Gregory Pfitzer, Colby College

Abstract

This paper represents an effort to bring some philosophical insights to bear on the current controversies in the field of American Studies. In particular, it attempts to analyze and evaluate the contributions of the so-called myth/symbols school to methodological concerns in the discipline. If this work is successful, it will not necessarily provide a neat and definite paradigm for American Studies students, but it will at least provide some guidelines and restraints for their study in the field.
