The knot of fire: the development of T.S. Eliot's attitude towards contemporary man and his society
Abstract
The hypothesis of my paper has been that Eliot's attitude towards contemporary man and his society suffered no striking reversal in mid-career from pessimism to optimism, but instead expanded in a line of consistent growth. In order to ascertain the validity of this hypothesis, I have traced Eliot's attitude throughout his entire oeuvre.
