Abstract
As a comparative study, this thesis has as an aim the clarification of the relationship between the philosophies of each thinker which will reveal that, strange as it may seem, there are important resemblances. This often-ignored fact will enable one to see their works in an entirely new light. It will also prove stimulating to consider two thinker's treatment of two concepts which have been the subject of debate for ages and which are meaningful and thought-provoking to all of us who, as Voltaire and Rousseau, have questioned, doubted, and yet have, found the need to believe in the existence of a value in man and of one external to him.
