Abstract
Arnold Joseph Toynbee is undoubtedly one of the most influential and significant historians of the twentieth century. Born in 1889 Taynbee lived and grew up in an atmosphere permeated with the teachings gleaned from a thorough and precise study of the Bible, the Classics and history. Toynbee himself attributes his deep concern for history to his mother, herself an historian. He has often expressed his gratitude to his mother for the influential role that she played in his life. He has stated that she "awakened in me a life-long interest in history by communicating to me her own interest in it at a very early stage of my life. "
