Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and comment upon some of the aspects of modern American serious drama between 1944 and 1954. In this ten-year period, thousands of plays have been written and hundreds of these have been produced; yet, of necessity, the study is limited to twenty-four plays. From these, perhaps it is unlikely that a comprehensive evaluation of the serious drama of the period may be derived, yet the plays were selected on a basis which would presumably eliminate all but the most significant works, centering attention on the new creative trends of the period.
