Abstract
Saint-John Perse, who ranks as one of the outstandIng writers of the modern period, has been concerned, throughout his career, with the problem of determining the responsibility and role of the poet in society. The intensity of purpose which he has shown in grappling with this problem, and the complete sincerity and integrity he maintains with his readers, are evident throughout his works. Perse's poetry, always the act of understanding, continues in the line of Baudelaire and other symbolists who sought to penetrate the mysteries of the universe by establishing correspondences between objects and our senses, and between physical and moral reality. Perse, like his predecessors is attempting to reveal the core of essential truth which lies beneath surface appearances.
