Abstract
This thesis is a two part project that investigates the determinants and effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Ethiopia. The first part provides an account of the theoretical explanation of FDI, reviews the historical policy regimes and regulatory frameworks in Ethiopia, provides literature review of the determinants FDI for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and empirically examines the determinants of FDI in Ethiopia using industry-level FDI inflows between 1992 and 2007. The second part investigates the nature and significance of productivity spillovers from FDI for the Ethiopian manufacturing sector using panel data comprised of firm-level data for the period 2002 to 2007.
