Abstract

A small shrub, Montanoa tomentosa, grows in the company of cactus and yuccas in the Mexican highlands. The plant is only native to the Mexican highlands at elevations between 5000 and 9000 feet. Commonly known as zoapatle, Aztec women would drink an herbal tea made from this plant to induce labor and prevent pregnancies. The women would drink liters of this tea in order for the uterotonic activity to take affect. The practice of drinking the herbal tea from the zoapatle plant is still used in parts of Mexico.
