Description

Many people are familiar with the appropriation of black customs. Everyone is aware of Miley Cyruss fiasco at the MTV Movie Awards and her need to appropriate twerking, but many do not know that black food is also commodified. This project aims to highlight soul food as a black custom that dates back to the 1700s in hopes of preventing further forms of appropriation of black customs. It also aims to show that soul food is as much a custom as twerking and both soul food and twerking serve as a connection for African-Americans to remember both the Motherland and America. This project will examine soul food in an average sized, southern city, Little Rock, Arkansas in its commodified form at Guss World Famous Fried Chicken restaurant and in a more traditional setting at Greater Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.
