Description

Colby Colleges music scene covers a wide variety of styles, genres, and structures with ensembles ranging from conductor-led orchestra to student-led a cappella groups. What is missing in this scene, though, is the presence of student bands, a rarity at Colby. This radio broadcast seeks to explore Funktion, the most prominent and active student band on campus and how they choose, learn, and make music. Founded in fall of 2013 by Matt Lipman 15, the group performs at a variety of events on campus, from Mary Low Coffeehouse open mic nights to Battle of the Bands in Page. Through observation of rehearsals and interviews with band members, I hope to gain a broader understanding of the process by which Funktion members learn and rehearse music, bringing songs from rehearsal to the stage. Funktion chooses songs in a democratic manner by voting and learns songs without the help of sheet music. The talented musicians in the band are able to pick up the music by practicing along with a recording. The band, which does not have a clear leader, works together, offering each other feedback, advice, and ideas for the future. Learning about how Funktion makes music gives the rest of campus an inside perspective on one of Colbys only student bands, promoting their talent, unique leadership format, and position on campus.
