Description

The recent rise in popularity of Bollywood movies and film stars in American society has sparked a genre of films that integrate elements of both Hollywood and Bollywood cinema. Many of these films are designed to cater to an American audience, but they incorporate themes from Indian culture and the Bollywood movie industry. This study explores the representation of Indian values embedded in films intended for American audiences, and attempts to determine what specific elements of Indian culture appeal to the Hollywood audience. In order to complete this analysis, the popular contemporary films Bend it Like Beckham, The Namesake, and Life of Pi will be evaluated as representations of values typically evoked by Bollywood films. The analysis of these three films, which gained wide popularity and success in the United States, will lead to the conclusion that Bollywood and Hollywood collaborative films selectively include thematic elements that appeal to an American audience rather than including all elements of a typical Bollywood film.
