Description

The Daly College in Indore, India has withstood the test of time and through this period of rapid development and transformations has maintained its reputation as one of the most prestigious elite schools in India. The Daly College was established in 1882 as a private institution to provide the princedoms of Central India with a British education. While it began as a school for Indian rulers, it continues to serve as a source of exclusive education for the Indian elite. We want to explore how Daly College was able to sustain its elite status in the midst of such dramatic change. We believe that Daly College can serve as a case study in our examination of elite schools. Through an in-depth analysis, we look to answer the bigger question of how education is valued in India, as well as unpack the definition of an elite institution in the local context, especially given Indias position in the global economy as well as its history and heritage. Ultimately, we hope this research will illuminate how Daly College is able to maintain its elite status and balance its vision of traditional values as espoused in its motto Knowledge is power while developing well-rounded global citizens.
